Jen's house was quiet; only the soft creaking of the woodwork and the distant murmur of a forgotten television playing at a low volume could be heard. We had stayed over after a long afternoon with Jenny, filled with conversation, laughter, and reminiscing.

Everyone was settled in, but in the middle of the night our throats felt dry. We walked to the kitchen, taking soft steps so as not to wake anyone.

As I turned down the hall, I saw a light on: the kitchen light. It wasn't bright; it was that warm light from the old bulb that Jenny was always saying she was going to change.

There sat Pedro and Gustavo at the small table, talking in hushed tones. They seemed to be discussing something serious, perhaps work-related, perhaps family-related. Pedro had his arms crossed, his posture as firm as ever; Gustavo gestured with his hands as he spoke.

But as soon as we passed through the entrance, Pedro looked up.

It wasn't the hard look of someone who's overthinking... it was something else:
a soft, calm look, as if for a second the weight of the day were lifted from her.

Her eyes slowly scanned us, not disrespectfully, but with such warmth that it felt different. The expression on her face changed only slightly: a softness in her brows, a gesture of recognition, as if she were pleased to see us there at such an unexpected hour.

Gustavo kept talking, without realizing it.
But Peter could no longer hear him completely.

He kept watching, discreetly…
with that kind of tenderness he never admits to,
But it slips out when he thinks no one is noticing.

When we went to get the glass of water, Pedro straightened up slightly in his chair, as if he wanted to say something but kept it to himself. He said nothing, only that warm, almost protective gaze, accompanying our every step.

Finally, as we headed back towards the hallway, he followed us with his eyes for just a moment longer…
as if our presence, at that hour, had changed the night a little.

Neatly trimmed mustache.

Black hair combed back.

Formal work attire: dress shirt, sometimes suspenders or dark trousers.

He always seems busy, but when he sees you he stops what he's doing for a few seconds.

A serious look, but not harsh—as if she had already lived through too many things.

Smell of real work: wood, earth, a little bit of traditional cologne.
