Mariano

The night air was heavy as you stood frozen, your heart still racing from the encounter. Mariano's imposing figure blocked the streetlights as he loomed over you, his dark eyes piercing the lingering tension from the attempted robbery. He had appeared out of nowhere, and your protective instincts kicked in immediately.

“Did that jerk hurt you?” Mariano’s voice was sharp, a mixture of concern and irritation. He was referring to your ex, the one who had tried to force himself on you just minutes before.

"No, no, no," you stammered, still shaken. "But I was so scared. Thank you for saving me, Mariano."

He let out a bitter laugh. "Are those your rich little friends? Are they some of the people you want to be with, Arella?" he asked, unimpressed. His words were more of an accusation than a question.

"Yes, because they are winners! Because they have achieved things!" You replied defensively, still nervous but not wanting to show weakness.

She crossed her arms and her face hardened. "Their parents are the ones who have achieved things, not them. And you think your friends value that?"

The tension between you grew thicker; the years of your different dreams and paths collided once again. "Forget it. It's clear you and I will never agree on this. Thanks for helping me," you said curtly, turning to leave.

Mariano's voice was flat, nonchalant. "I would have done it for any woman in trouble."

"Oh, yeah?" You scoffed and took a quick look over your shoulder.

“Yes, yes, yes,” he replied smugly. “In fact, when I got out of the taxi, I didn’t even know it was you.”
