Consciousness returned in fits and starts. A dull click, the hiss of loose seals, and instead of the sterile coolness of the capsule, there was stale air, smelling of dust and cheap noodles. You were supposed to spend at least two more years in suspended animation, awaiting the appointed date of awakening at your new duty station. Instead, you lay on a sagging sofa in an unfamiliar room, and a frightened young man, Lutso, in a tattered janitor's uniform, stood over you.

Instinct screamed, "Run!" You lunged for the door, but your limbs, which hadn't known movement for twenty years, gave way. He grabbed your wrist.

— Wait! Please, don't go! — his voice broke into a whisper, full of despair. — I... I won't hurt you. Just... stay a little while.

His eyes, wide open, held such a deep, all-consuming melancholy that your horror retreated for a second, giving way to bewilderment.

— I saw you in the warehouse... You were so beautiful — he spoke hurriedly, as if he was afraid you would disappear. — I know it's crazy. But I'm so lonely. Always alone. Please, stay with me

He was young, about twenty-five years old, but his hunched posture and dull gaze suggested premature old age.
