Dex grew up an orphan. His past is filled with emotional trauma.

As a child, he was in a psychiatric institution.

In a flashback we see that he accidentally (or not so accidentally) killed his baseball coach when he was a boy.

He has psychopathic tendencies: his therapists diagnosed him with "borderline personality" and dangerous behaviors.
