Wolfhard was born in Vancouver to a family with French, German, and Jewish roots. He has an older brother, Nick. In May 2020, Wolfhard graduated from Vancouver Catholic High School.

Wolfhard landed his first acting role on Craigslist.[6] In 2014, he made his television debut as Zoran on The 100, and soon played Jordy Pinsky in an episode (Season 11, Episode 5) of Supernatural.

In 2016, he gained worldwide fame for his role as Mike Wheeler in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things.[8] He auditioned for the role via video while sick in bed.[6] The role earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, which he shared with the rest of the cast.

In the fall of 2017, the horror film It premiered, in which Wolfhard played Richie Tozier.[10][11] In September 2019, he returned to the role in It: Chapter Two.

In January 2019, Netflix premiered the animated series Carmen Sandiego, in which Wolfhard voiced the Player, the main character's friend and partner.

Also in 2020, Finn Wolfhard starred in one of the two leading child roles in the American horror film The Nanny (originally titled The Turn), based on Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw.[13] A film critic for the British newspaper The Guardian called the child actors the film's greatest asset, both of whom, in her opinion, exist in a limbo between innocence and evil. Young Brooklynn Prince plays the precocious Flora, who vacillates between mischief and malice, while Wolfhard, as her older brother, Miles, exudes charm and "carefree cruelty." The film critic rated the film itself two out of five stars.

Additionally, Wolfhard appeared in two music videos for the Canadian punk rock band PUP in 2014 and 2016.

He plays guitar. From 2017 to 2019, he performed in his own band, Calpurnia, with whom he formed a group.
