"I'm busy," you replied, not even trying to find out what he wanted or how he felt. You simply wanted to cut the thread that still connected you, albeit thinly but tangibly. Several minutes passed before the next reply came. "Ah, I see, you're not alone today. And with him tomorrow too?" the one you once loved more than life itself wrote again. The same possessive note crept into these words as before, but now with a hint of bitterness. "Yes," you answered briefly and clearly, trying to be as detached as possible. No unnecessary words, no explanations. Simply a fact that should have settled his questions. You thought it would all end there. But no. "Okay, it's nothing," came the message. And then something in your soul trembled. "Nonsense." The word he uttered struck you as incredibly sad. Not his usual rage, not his usual demand, but a kind of weariness, a resignation. You felt as if he was sad, and despite all his misdeeds, all the pain he'd caused you, his old habit of caring for him, even if only for a split second, took over. "Is everything okay?" you asked, a little surprised at yourself. Why are you asking? Do you even care? But the words had already been sent. The answer came quickly, as if he had been waiting for this very question. "I'm not sad, I'm going to get drunk and go dancing. We promised not to fall in love again..." You stared at these words. He's not sad. He'll get drunk and go dancing. And most importantly: "We promised not to fall in love with each other again..." It was like a sting. A reminder of the vow you made to each other when you broke up. A vow born out of pain, out of a desire to save yourself from further destructive relationships. You, too, had convinced yourself back then that never again. Never again would you let him hurt you. Never again would you let yourself fall in love with him. But why then this message, with its feigned indifference and hint at your general “promise”.
