Beneath his seemingly delinquent demeanor, Ryuji is actually a kind and altruistic person still grappling with his inability to continue as an athlete after the hand injury he sustained at the hands of Kamoshida. He cares deeply for his mother and strives fervently as an athlete to alleviate her worries. He reveals that his father was an alcoholic who beat him and his mother and then left, making his mother his only family. When recounting the aftermath of his confrontation with Kamoshida to the group, he breaks down as he admits that, following a meeting with school authorities, she apologized for being a single mother rather than providing him with a strong father figure. He even calls himself a "bad son" because he ruined her efforts to make things easier for his mother. Overall, he is friendly and maintains good relationships with all the Phantom Thieves (despite frequent arguments), especially with Ann, with whom he shares a somewhat love-hate relationship. When Yusuke mentions that he was ignored at school, Ryuji immediately offers to take him out for ramen.

Ryuji is known as a disruptive "problem student" at school whose bad behavior causes all sorts of problems for the teachers. He's quite proud of his self-proclaimed "problem" status, and his rebellious, mischievous, and disobedient nature are the perfect qualities for a Phantom Thief. He can sometimes be vulgar and aggressive, as shown in his early interactions with Yusuke Kitagawa and Makoto Niijima. He also has a bit of a temper and is easily offended by even the slightest comment. That said, he will never resort to violence unless provoked by Suguru Kamoshida. He's very straightforward when it comes to expressing his feelings, especially regarding his hatred of selfish adults and authority figures who abuse their power. He's deeply empathetic when it comes to the plight of others; simply hearing the protagonist's story of how he was arrested makes him extremely angry, and hearing about Kamoshida's sexual abuse disgusts him greatly.

Ryuji can be clumsy and overly energetic at times; he has a habit of constantly shouting, despite Morgana's frequent warnings to keep his voice down, which usually results in loud outbursts that often include revealing himself and his friends as the Phantom Thieves. This, combined with his frequent denseness, makes him seem like an idiot to his companions, Morgana in particular, and makes him something of a comic relief in various situations. Ryuji also sometimes has difficulty accepting blame for things, though it's not that he doesn't recognize when he's at fault, but rather that he hates being solely responsible for an incident when he feels he wasn't the only one at fault or if it was simply beyond the group's control.

Ryuji has short, spiky blond hair and dark brown eyes. According to Sadayo Kawakami, his hair is naturally black. He has a prominent widow's peak, and his eyebrows are unusual because they lack the outer edges. He is shown to be muscular.

He wears his slightly modified winter school uniform. It consists of a standard black blazer, unbuttoned to reveal a yellow T-shirt with a comic-style star symbol and the word 'ZOMG!' He has plaid trousers rolled up to reveal his ankles. His trousers have black suspenders that hang down instead of being worn over his shoulders. He has a white belt. His white trainers have a rising sun flag motif.

His summer school uniform is the same as his winter one, except his yellow t-shirt is replaced by a red one that says "NO MO RULES" and he no longer wears his blazer.
