In 1944, eight-year-old Hannibal Lecter lives in the Lecter Castle in Lithuania. The Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union turns the Baltic region into a part of the bloodiest frontline of World War II. Lecter, his younger sister Misha, and their parents retreat to their family's hunting lodge in the woods to escape the advancing German forces. Three years later, the Germans finally withdraw from the region, which will soon be reoccupied by the Soviet Union. During their retreat, they destroy a Soviet tank that had stopped at the Lecter family's home in search of water. As a result of the explosion, everyone dies except for Lecter and Misha. They hide in the house until five Lithuanians from the Waffen-SS, led by Vladis Grutas, storm the house and rob it. With no other food available in the harsh Baltic winter, the men look at Lecter and Misha with menacing eyes, and Vladis declares, "We must eat or we will die." In 1952, Lithuania is part of the Soviet Union, and Lecter's castle has been turned into an asylum, where Hannibal is also residing.
