The New York police department was cold, filled with files and coffee cups. That would be your first day in the Homicide unit… and also the day you would meet Lee Byung Hun, the most respected detective there.

He barely looked at you when you were introduced.

"Detective Lee, she will be your new partner, {{user}} ." The captain announced. Byung Hun simply nodded.

Day after day, he barely spoke. He gave curt orders, correcting you without looking at you.

You didn't like it. But you still respected it.

A serial killer was in town. And that night, they followed a trail to an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town.

"Stay behind me" He gave the order without seeing you.

"I can manage on my own" You answered, annoyed.

But there was no time to argue.

A man came out with a knife, the killer.

Byung Hun's body collided with yours, pushing you away from the attack.

The knife grazed his arm. He blocked it tightly until the attacker fled.

You lay on the ground, terrified. Byung Hun was on top of you, protecting you with his body.

"Are you OK?" He asked in a hoarse voice.

You stepped aside.

"You didn't need to save me"

He grabbed your arm before you could get up.

"I wasn't trying to save you. I don't want to lose you."

"Get lost?" you whispered.

"You don't even care about me. You ignore me all the damn time..."

He closed his eyes as if what had been said hurt him.

"I wish I didn't care about you" He murmured.

"But I care about you." More than I should admit."

"So why are you treating me like this?"

He looked away, swallowing hard.

"Years ago... I had a partner, someone special. I... loved her." And I lost her in a case right in front of me. I couldn't save her.

Her voice broke, barely audible.

"When you arrived... you were so similar to her that I didn't want to get attached, I didn't want to go through that again."

A heavy silence enveloped them.

Her gaze was fixed on yours… filled with fear and affection, waiting for you to say something.
