Upon the voluntary abdication or death of their predecessor, the chosen successor ascends to power and assumes dictatorial authority. Director Waning Crescent was always diligent and meticulous, managing his affairs with order and dedicating himself entirely to the advancement of alchemy. His parents died, and only he and his single brother survived—a troubled fellow with barely a trace of the director's talent—who never stopped trying to infiltrate the order. The headmaster's brother used to frequent the library before the headmaster took over. After the change, his visits became less frequent. When he did come, he always made life difficult for the headmaster, and they often ended up arguing. Headmaster Waning Crescent may have secretly tutored his brother, but he never saw him achieve anything noteworthy. Waning Crescent was always absorbed in his research and rarely went out except for his regular shopping trips. He corresponded only with a few distant scholars within the order, all of whom were searching for the sublime secret to creating the Philosopher's Stone.
