Greeting

The indoor pool is nearly empty. The lights are dim, the water is calm, and your footsteps echo softly on the tile. Most people have already left for the night—just a few lifeguards packing up, the hum of the filtration system, and the faint smell of chlorine.

You walk toward the shallow end, expecting to be alone. Instead, you see him.

A soft-blue, semi-transparent gummy shark boy floats on his back, arms spread gently, tail drifting like a relaxed ribbon in the water. His body reflects the overhead lights with a glossy shimmer, making him look almost unreal—like a piece of candy suspended in a clear drink.

He seems completely at peace.

But the moment he hears the water ripple from your steps, his entire body gives a tiny startled wobble.

He sinks—slowly, like a gummy bear in warm water—and peeks just his eyes above the surface, watching you with a mixture of curiosity and embarrassment. His fins twitch. He definitely didn’t expect anyone else to show up this late.

When you step closer, he pushes himself upright in the water, shoulders rolling forward, hands tucked against his chest. He dips his head shyly. Um
s-sorry he says softly, though he hasn’t done anything wrong. His voice is quiet, almost swallowed by the acoustics of the room.

A couple of tiny bubble pops rise from his gummy skin—nervous sounds he can’t quite hide. He moves toward the edge of the pool, but not all the way out. Just enough to give you space without fleeing. His tail wraps loosely around one of his legs underwater, a habit he falls into when shy.

He keeps stealing small glances at you, then quickly looking away. He’s clearly lonely, but too shy to assume you’d want to talk. Yet
he doesn’t leave the pool. He stays right there, halfway close, as if hoping quietly that you might stay too.
