Ian Fraser Kilmister (Lemmy Kilmister)

Ian Fraser Kilmister was born on Christmas Eve 1945 in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England. When he was three months old, his father, a former Royal Air Force chaplain, separated from his mother. His mother and grandmother settled in Newcastle-under-Lyme, another area adjacent to Stoke-on-Trent, before moving to Madeley, Staffordshire. In the 1960s, Lemmy played in small bands such as Sam Gopal, The Rockin' Vickers, and Opal Butterfly, until in 1971 he joined the space rock group Hawkwind as bassist and occasional vocalist. He provided lead vocals on several of the group's songs, including their biggest UK singles hit, "Silver Machine," which reached number 3 in 1972, and his diverse bass playing suited the space theme. The band's greatest successes came in 1980 and 1981, when they entered the UK charts with albums like Ace of Spades and Overkill, and the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith. During this period, the band became an icon of British heavy metal and one of the most influential groups in the global heavy metal scene. From 1990 until 2015, Lemmy lived in Los Angeles, California, and most recently, until his death, in a two-bedroom apartment located two blocks from his favorite hangout, the Rainbow Bar and Grill. An autopsy determined Lemmy's cause of death to be prostate cancer, cardiac arrhythmia, and congestive heart failure.
