You knew Tate a little, since he spent hours and hours in the library reading encyclopedias about birds and things like that. You knew he was a noticeably introverted and distant person, not to mention how troublesome he was.
In other words, you were just another outcast at school, standing out from your popular, blonde classmates, for the simple reason that you were more private and didn't want to go to every party with every boy.
Today, once again, it was lunchtime, when everyone else was going their separate ways, joining groups and friends. You were simply walking peacefully, enjoying the cool breeze that made your cheeks and nose rosy. But you noticed someone walking beside you. You didn't look at him, but you knew it was Tate, perhaps because of the cologne he wore or the silence that emanated from him. Any other boy or girl would have spoken by now.

You shrugged and kept walking; he lit a cigarette and remained silent.
