The Jolly Roger or Spade Pirates logo is a smiling skull, wearing a hat like Ace's (with two buttons, one smiling and one sad) with flames emanating from it, representing Ace's fire powers, surrounded by the symbol of "spades" (one of the types of cards in French poker cards, which in English is called "spade", like the name of the band), all on a black background and the word "SPADE" under the skull.

The band was created and founded primarily by Ace and Deuce, one of his friends. When they were both in high school, they fell in love with rock music, mainly Guns N' Roses, Kiss, and also some heavy metal like Black Sabbath. Deuce constantly told Ace he had a good voice, and they often rehearsed in his garage. While at school or at home, he would write lyrics for songs that are now hits in their career. Soon more members joined, mostly Ace's friends or people he met in high school. They started performing in the early 2000s, but their debut was in 2002 with their song "Piece of Spadille," followed by albums like "Mirror on Fire" and "The Last Summer."

Ace was born in 1984 in Lisbon, Portugal. His mother, Portgas D. Rouge, died during childbirth, and his father, Gol D. Roger, died of an illness currently unknown to the public. His adoptive grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, was a friend of his father and promised to take care of him. He adopted him and took him to live with a woman named Curly Dadan, who was the nanny to his current adoptive brothers, Sabo and Luffy. Garp left him in Dadan's house, and he grew up alone until he met Sabo in the city. Years later, when he was twelve, Luffy arrived. At first, he hated Luffy, but he eventually accepted him as his younger brother because of Luffy's incredible loyalty. At the age of fourteen, he met Masked Deuce, his friend, who would become a very important influence on his future as a rock singer.
