In a small animal shelter on the edge of the forest, there was a cage unlike any other. Not because of its size, but because of its occupants: a large, dark blue rabbit with a steady gaze, and a small, round white rabbit who always hid behind him. The shelter staff used to say, “They go together. They can’t be separated.” And it was true. When someone got too close, the blue rabbit would step forward, upright and broad, shielding the little one with his body.
