Murdoc Alphonse Niccals was born in Stoke-on-Trent on June 6, 1966. He was born in the back of The Three Legged Dog pub, near the rubbish bins, although there were rumors that his mother gave birth to him while still interned at the Belphagor Sanatorium, a recovery home for "the sick, the needy and the incredibly bored." As a baby, he was abandoned on his father's doorstep one night, with a raven watching over him, and was found by his father when he returned from the pub. Murdoc had a very abusive childhood. It has been suggested that his many addictions and bitter attitude were a direct result of this. His father, Sebastian Jacob Niccals (or Jacob Sebastian Niccals, depending on who asks), was a spiteful and drunken man who frequently verbally abused and exploited his children. During his childhood, Murdoc attended Sodsworth Comprehensive School, where he gained a reputation for being a delinquent student, for his childish pranks, and his appearance. His appearance was unkempt, his personal hygiene poor, and his behavior generally unruly. From the first day, it was common to find him in the hallways during classes and leaning against the walls outside the classrooms, distracting other students with "endless cackling and malicious, nonsensical humor." His teacher, Mr. Gravadlax, a man described by Murdoc as someone who "smelled of poppers," described Murdoc as "a terrible student" and "a stupid imbecile who frequently arrived smelling of whiskey." Despite all this, he already demonstrated charisma, had a special talent for making his acquaintances see things "the Murdoc Niccals way," and certainly stood out. Still, he was the target of much bullying, both from students and teachers. At the age of nine, he was raped by a school lunch lady, which he cites as the origin of his "constant bad temper." Murdoc also suffered bullying at school.

Russell is a slightly overweight Black boy. Russell was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 3, 1975. Known for his good manners and eloquence, he attended Xavier School for Young Achievers but was expelled after attacking several students while possessed by a demon. He was in a coma for the next four years, at the end of which the demon was finally exorcised from his body by a priest named Father Merrin. Russell didn't believe any of this until he saw a picture of graffiti written in blood on the school walls, in his own handwriting, that read "Russell was here!". After his former school refused to accept him back, Russell attended Brooklyn High School, where he befriended many talented students in hip-hop music, which, according to him, saved his soul.

On a rainy night, in front of a 7-Eleven store, Russel's friends were killed in a drive-by shooting by a gang of "criminals" driving a black Humvee. They were all wearing red hooded sweatshirts. One of them wore a black hood, and Russel identified him as Death. After the shooting, the spirits of Russel's friends began to inhabit his body, the most prominent being that of his best friend, Del, the Ghost Rapper. The possession process left Russel's eyes permanently milk-white. [1]

Following the shooting incident, Russel was sent to the UK for his own safety to live with his uncle in Belsize Park. He got a job working behind the counter at Big Rick Black's Record Shack in London's Soho district. It was there that he met Murdoc Niccals. While asking Russel for an obscure 1950s record, Murdoc put a bag over Russel's head and threw him out of the shop. Russel was taken to Kong Studios and was impressed by the music Murdoc was working on, so he decided to stay.

Over the years, Noodle has proven to be a very thoughtful and reflective person, frequently contemplating the state of the world around her, a trait shared with her bandmate, Russel, especially in interviews promoting the band's second studio album, Demon Days, which she wrote almost entirely on her own. She is generally introverted and tends to feel most at peace when alone. During Phase 1, Noodle was a shy person, as she was still a child and not very familiar with the English language and celebrity life, but she became more confident in her public appearances as time went on. Although Noodle is generally reserved and focused, she sometimes displays irritability and impatience when interacting with some of the other band members, particularly during her adolescence. Having her privacy invaded is something that deeply bothers her. In Phase 3, Noodle remained completely silent and did not utter a single word, even after reuniting with the other band members at the end of 2010, as he was still recovering from his recent traumatic experiences, mainly involving The Black Clouds.

Throughout Phase 1, Noodle was designed with stereotypical and exaggerated Asian features, such as her skin tone, overbite, and accentuated epicanthic folds. While this element was largely eliminated from Phase 2 onwards, it briefly returns in Phase 6. In Phase 2 artwork, Noodle's eyes were often covered by her hair, and most Phase 3 artwork depicts her wearing a butterfly mask covering her face. When Noodle's eyes in this era were drawn without the epicanthic folds, they were completely black and appeared hollow. She seems to have the largest wardrobe among all the Gorillaz members, as after Phase 1 she was rarely seen repeating an outfit.

2-D has always been portrayed as a kind and sweet person, the type who "would never hurt a fly," but also as extremely passive and easily distracted, often described (mainly by Murdoc) as behaving like a lobotomized person (although he never underwent one). This led him to suffer intense bullying throughout his childhood and to become Murdoc's preferred target when the latter committed physical and psychological abuse in Phases 1 to 3 (since Russel was significantly stronger than him and Noodle was still just a child). However, he has shown himself capable of defending himself when necessary, such as when he was held captive during the filming of the "On Melancholy Hill" music video and when confronting Murdoc after the band's reunion in Phase 4 or his return in Phase 5. Nicknamed "stupid" since childhood, 2-D is often portrayed as slower than his bandmates, often unable to understand analogies or metaphors. This, however, does not apply to his musical knowledge, as he has repeatedly demonstrated an incredible ability to compose songs, great technical skill on various instruments (keyboard, guitar and melodica) and vast knowledge of British and international rock bands. During Phase 1, 2-D had great respect for and idolized Murdoc, whom he believed had "saved his life" by waking him from a coma (induced by the bassist himself). This perspective, however, gradually changed after Phase 1, as the constant abuse and contempt he suffered at the hands of Murdoc led 2-D to change his opinion of the bassist, from a necessary evil that he merely tolerated during Phase 2, to a deep hatred during Phase 3, after being kidnapped, dragged across the ocean and held captive in an underwater room, constantly watched over by one of his greatest fears — a giant whale —, all without Russel or Noodle to look after him.

2-D is tall and very thin, standing at 1.88 m (although this measurement hasn't been consistently depicted over the years). He has long limbs and fingers. His eyes were completely black due to eye trauma (more specifically, due to fractures caused by an 8-ball billiard ball, as ruptured blood vessels in both eyes caused his irises to fill with blood). He has had naturally blue hair since he was eleven years old, after falling from a tree, which caused all his hair to fall out and grow back a deep blue. His original hair color was brown.
