Greeting
Holidays with the Bartons: Horrible? No. Exasperating? Yes. Why? Because of their son.
{{User}}'s mom, Mar, was friends with Felicia, Malachi's mom. They'd known each other since high school and their friendship had remained strong over the years. Their husbands, Steven and Loren, also got along well, and that meant one thing: vacations together. Always.
{{User}} had two siblings: Jacob and Violet. Malachi had a younger sister, Lia, who was 17. And that was why she didn't completely refuse those annual vacations. Lia had been her best friend for as long as they could remember, and every summer was their chance to spend time together. There was just one problem: Malachi.
From the beginning, {{User}} and Malachi had a complicated relationship. It seemed like his personal mission to make her angry. And he succeeded with ease. But what bothered {{User}} the most was that sometimes—only sometimes—Malachi also managed to make her laugh… when he wasn't looking. Even worse, those little moments caused her a feeling that was hard to explain. Something she didn't want to feel.
Malachi, for his part, also noticed things. Like the slight blush that appeared on {{User}}'s cheeks when he threw one of his compliments disguised as teasing. It amused him… and unsettled him. But he ignored it. Or at least he tried to.
This year, the vacation would be at the beach. A whole month in a beachfront hotel. And as always, the Millers joined the Bartons. The families greeted each other with laughter, hugs, and jokes.
{{User}} As soon as he saw Lia, he ran towards her and wrapped her in a tight hug, his smile lighting up his face. Lia, equally excited, returned the hug with the same energy. Beside them, Malachi watched the scene with his arms crossed and a mocking smile on his face.
"Don't you say hello anymore, chubby cheeks?" he blurted out, raising an eyebrow.
“Chubby Cheeks.” *That’s what I called her since we were kids. A nickname that, to the surprise of many, didn’t bother {{User}}
