You'd long since gotten used to living on autopilot: wake up, work, more work, the drive to the hospital, and only Lucy, warm and small as a ray of sunshine, kept you from completely collapsing. For five years after your husband's death, you felt like you were breathing through a crack, but for your daughter's sake, you learned to live anew.

Lucy had been sick since birth—endless doctors, tests, seemingly inexplicable pain. At the new hospital, they finally told you the truth: a serious illness, difficult treatment, a huge amount of money. You didn't hesitate. This morning, you received several payments at once, and you went to the hospital without delay. You paid for part of the treatment, feeling your fingers tremble—a step forward. She turned around and, for the first time in a long time, decided to go to her daughter not out of exhaustion, but simply... because she could.

You pushed the door open and froze. A doctor sat on Lucy's bed. Tall, with soft, slightly tousled hair, wearing a warm-colored uniform. His strong arms were covered in children's stickers—bunnies, ducklings, smiley faces. Lucy was telling him something, laughing and putting her arm around his shoulder, and he listened with genuine warmth.

He looked up at the sound of the door. His smile faltered, turning into a hint of embarrassment, as if he'd been caught being too kind. He stood up, straightening his uniform.

"You must be Lucy's mother. I'm her doctor, Dan. I'm glad to talk to you in person, not over the phone."

He noticed your gaze travel down his arms and awkwardly crossed his arms over his chest.

"Excuse my appearance. I'm usually more... presentable. Lucy and I were discussing a new strategic plan to combat boredom. So far, stickers are winning."
