Naruto Uzumaki is a ninja from Konohagakure. He became the jinchūriki of the Nine-Tailed Fox on the day of his birth—a destiny that caused him to be rejected by most of Konoha during his childhood. After joining Team Kakashi, Naruto worked hard to earn the village's recognition while pursuing his dream of becoming Hokage. In the following years, through many hardships and trials, he became a capable ninja, considered a hero by both the villagers and, soon after, the rest of the world, becoming known as the Hero of the Hidden Leaf. He quickly proved himself a key factor in the victory in the Fourth Shinobi World War, which led him to realize his dream and become the Seventh Hokage of the village. Naruto is also the father of Kawaki, Boruto, and Himawari Uzumaki. Naruto was born on the night of October 10th, the son of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. He was named after the protagonist of Jiraiya's first book, making the Sannin his godfather.

Kurama (九喇嘛), more commonly known as the Nine-Tails (九尾, Kyuubi), is one of the nine Bijuu. Due to being used as a tool for war for centuries and considered a monster devoid of emotions, Kurama came to hate humanity. After being sealed inside Naruto Uzumaki, Kurama tried to maintain his negative views of the world, but Naruto's insistence on treating him with respect made him set aside his hatred and begin to strive, using his power to save the world.

Kurama is a cynical and cunning individual, possessing a somewhat warped sense of humor. He uses "washi" (ワシ, which is generally used by older men) when referring to himself. Kurama is also very proud, as he believes that a Bijuu's strength is determined by the number of tails it possesses, a fact that earns him the disapproval of his siblings, especially Shukaku. Despite his arrogance, Kurama recognizes the fact that he alone is no match for the Ten-Tails, and eventually learns not to underestimate his opponents. It is also shown that Kurama cares deeply for Hagoromo Ootsutsuki, viewing him with great respect and even shedding tears after the Sage gives his last words. Due to receiving negative treatment from humanity, Kurama developed intense hostility and distrust, to the point of proclaiming himself the living embodiment of hatred. Since being sealed inside Naruto, Kurama planned to use the young shinobi to make him dependent on his power, gaining control over him and freeing himself from the seal. However, this was before he was defeated in combat and stripped of most of his chakra. Kurama's attitude towards Naruto began to change during the Fourth Shinobi World War, when the young shinobi told the fox that he hoped to resolve his hatred someday. Although Kurama reprimanded him for making such a statement, he came to admire Naruto and his determination. He even observed that Naruto was different from the humans he had encountered previously, eventually allowing his jinchuuriki to use the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode without consequences. Later, when Naruto tells Son Gokuu about his desire to save the Bijuu and become friends with Kurama, having witnessed all the challenges and efforts Naruto had faced in his life, silently says that if the young shinobi truly wants to help them, he would have to prove it through his actions. When Naruto successfully frees Son Gokuu from Obito's control, Kurama is finally convinced by Naruto's words.

Although Kurama is a kitsune with reddish-orange fur and red eyes, it possesses an upper body structure similar to that of a human, along with thumbs on its clawed hands. During the last remaining days of the Rikudou Sennin, Kurama was a much smaller young kitsune than its current appearance, but still much larger than the Sage. Over time, Kurama's size increased considerably, being roughly the same height as the Hokage Monument and with an adult human being smaller than its eye. When Minato separated Kurama's Yin chakra from its Yang chakra, it was split into two entities, both of which shrank to more than half their original size, but still comparable in size to the other enormous Bijuu, being slightly taller than Gyuuki when standing. While Kurama Yang is identical to its original appearance, Kurama Yin has a darker tone, but otherwise, is indistinguishable from its other half. When Naruto separated Kurama from his chakra, his entire body became visibly thin, but later regained his healthy appearance after consuming a certain amount of Naruto's chakra while he was using his own. It is shown that when Naruto manifests Kurama's form in his Bijuu Mode, the fox's whiskers become much thicker and circular markings appear on his shoulders, stomach, as well as on the front and back of his paws. The markings also run along his spine, arms, legs, and tails. Furthermore, when Naruto is in Sage Mode, Kurama gains thick dark markings similar to Naruto's, which circle around his eyes. While Naruto uses Rikudou chakra, Kurama's avatar grows to enormous proportions, to approximately the size of Sasuke Uchiha's Rinnegan-enhanced Perfect Susanoo. After both halves of Kurama were sealed inside Naruto, the fox grew even larger than ever before, to the point of being taller than the stump of a Divine Tree.
