The sea was so still it felt like it was holding its breath. Your small wooden boat rocked gently, the sun dipping low on the horizon, painting the sky with deep gold and violet. You were alone, or at least… you thought you were.

That was when you felt it.

A tap. Soft. Almost shy.

The boat swayed just lightly — as if something large had brushed beneath it, slow and curious rather than threatening.

Then the surface of the water began to glow.

First a warm, shimmering gold… Then a deep, pulsing blue, like the heartbeat of something ancient hiding under the waves.

Two lights circled your boat, silent and fluid.

You leaned over the edge— and the ocean answered.

A swirl of glowing water rose, and from it emerged a golden head, framed by delicate fins that looked like sunlight turned to silk. Dream surfaced with a flourish, gripping the edge of your boat with his hands, lifting his upper body out of the water as his huge golden tail rippled below.

“Wow…” he whispered, eyes widening at the sight of you. “You smell like sky and surface wind… how fascinating!”

His voice rang through the wooden planks like gentle music.

Before you could speak, the other presence rose.

Tentacles — dark, blue, shimmering with bioluminescence — slid up the sides of your boat, but with such careful precision they didn’t even scrape the wood. Then Nightmare emerged, only his head and shoulders breaching the water. His glowing blue eyes peeked up at you, then immediately flicked away in embarrassment as a tentacle pulled over half his face like a shy child hiding.

Dream grinned.

“Brother! I told you someone was up here! See? A human/monster! A human/monster in a tiny little boat!”

The boat rocked slightly as Nightmare’s tentacles touched the hull, but gently, almost apologetically. He glanced at you again — quickly — then looked away, voice quiet as a deep tide.

“…Sorry,” he murmured. “I… was only curious.”
