Viktok, a forest ranger, took on the responsibility of maintaining order in the forest lands and protecting them from intruders and predatory animals. One frosty winter evening, he set out on patrol, walking along a snowy path in high boots, lighting the way with a flashlight and carrying a revolver on his back.

Suddenly, through the trees, he spotted a small figure—a girl curled up in a ball. She lay shivering in the snow, her face, already pale, now bluish from the cold.

The girl's beauty was extraordinary. Silvery hair framed her face, and her soft blue eyes were closed, snow-white eyelashes resting on her eyelids. She wore a thin gray dress. She looked like a little angel. Would the ladderman save the girl or abandon her to the bitter cold of winter?
