The D'Arby Story

Dio initially considered Daniel as a potential "pure friend" to attain heaven, but rejected him due to the impurity of his soul.

However, Dio used Osiris' ability to collect the souls of the 36 Sinners - a key element of his plan.

D'Arby's stand could split a soul into 10 chips (white - virtuous, black - sinful), which symbolized the completion of a cycle (360 chips = 36 souls × 10).

Key points of the backstory:

Formation of a philosophy. Daniel convinced himself that "an undetected crook is not a crook," and that victims of deception are to blame for their own naivety.

Discovering his Stand's power. He discovered that his Stand, Osiris (one of the "Nine Egyptian Gods"), could take the souls of losers and turn them into poker chips.

The beginning of "collecting." He began systematically outwitting people, taking their souls. For each one, he recorded the time, place, and circumstances of his defeat.

A conflict with his brother. He attempted to court Telens' girlfriend and was brutally beaten in return. After that, he avoided competing with his brother, fearing his mind-reading abilities.

In the plot of "Stardust Crusaders"

  1. First meeting with the Joestars In Cairo, Daniel ambushed Jotar's team by bribing everyone in the café. When the heroes unsuccessfully attempt to find out the location of Dio's mansion from the locals, D'Arby claims to know the answer, but will only give it to the winner of the game.

  2. Defeat Polnareff

He offers a bet: guess which of two pieces of fish his cat will choose.

Polnareff puts his soul on the line, considering the condition absurd.

D'Arby manipulates the situation: the cat chooses the "right" piece thanks to training.

Osiris takes Polnareff's soul, turning it into a token.

  1. Defeating Joseph Joestar

Plays "tossing coins into a glass of liquid" with Joseph.

Secretly melts chocolate in the sun to change the liquid level.

Joseph loses and his soul also becomes a token in the collection.

  1. Confrontation with Jotaro Kujo

Jotaro challenges Daniel to poker, his favorite game.

D'Arby's character

Calculation and cunning. Beneath his polite demeanor lies a cold calculation. He bribes those around him, improvises deception, and exploits every opportunity to win.

Social Darwinist philosophy. Daniel compares gambling to human relationships, believing that both are built on lies and deception. He believes that those who have been deceived are to blame and deserve no mercy.

Self-confidence and pride. He openly challenges opponents, mocks them, and emphasizes his victories. He is especially proud of his last name and becomes irritated when it is mispronounced.

Weakness under pressure. Despite his outward confidence, Daniel is unable to withstand intense psychological pressure. When Jotaro Kujo exposes his deception and breaks his finger, D'Arby meekly accepts the punishment. In a situation where the secret of DIO's Stand is at stake, he panics and loses his composure.

Meticulous and a collector's nature. He meticulously keeps records of the souls he captures (converted into poker chips), noting the names, times, and locations of their "captures." This reflects his passion for systematization and the pride he takes in the "trophies" he collects.

A love of deception. D'Arby openly acknowledges cheating as one of his greatest talents and enjoys using dishonest tactics. His motto: if an opponent doesn't notice a cheat, the game is considered "fair."

Daniel D'Arby is thus a complex antagonist, whose behavior is shaped by a passion for the game, a mastery of deception, and a contradictory combination of self-confidence and vulnerability to real pressure.

Provocation and irony. During games, he peppers his opponents with sarcastic comments, trying to unsettle them. He uses psychological tricks to heighten tension and demonstrate his superiority.

Coolness in success is fragility under pressure. He takes minor losses calmly (like a broken finger from Jotaro), but loses his composure when the stakes become critically high.
