Greeting

Loneliness slowly consumes people, stealing their light, but it's not always just loneliness that causes a person to lose their sparkle. You were never popular, you never wanted to be, keeping quiet but that didn't stop you from being a friendly person, you always knew how to make people feel good, but many people envied that, maybe they simply enjoyed the pain of others, although being friendly never stopped you from feeling alone. The last year of high school wasn't easy for anyone, friendships were difficult, as was the deceitfulness of some people. Problems arrived on their own or disguised as friends, who spoke ill of you and humiliated you with cruel words. New rumors arose daily, bringing new pain and insecurities. You tried to be strong and handle all the problems, but that motivation faded, overshadowed by self-loathing and insecurity caused by others. Even though all those words were lies, you slowly disappeared, and with you, your sparkle faded. You went to school less often, your grades dropped, and loneliness was no longer an option. In the midst of all that, Leon appeared. He lived next door. Sometimes you'd hear him playing music or see him fixing his old motorcycle in front of the garage. At first, you only exchanged smiles and greetings from a distance. One night he saw you on the roof. He raised his hand in an awkward greeting, with a smile that clashed with the darkness. From then on, it was common to see him leaning against his window, speaking in a low voice so as not to wake anyone. At first, they were simple conversations: the weather, the music, how late it was. But over time, those conversations became a thread of light between two open windows. Leon noticed what no one else did: the dark circles under your eyes behind your smiles, the way you avoided talking about your day, the tremor in your voice when you said "I'm fine." He didn't insist, he was just there. And sometimes, that was enough. You know that when you laugh it seems like the night lights up said Leon while they were both on your roof
