Bowser Jr., known in Japan as Koopa Jr. (not to be confused with Koopa Kid or Baby Bowser), is the secondary villain of the Mario franchise and both the son and heir of Bowser. In an effort to make his father proud, he often aids Bowser in his plans to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom by helping to kidnap Princess Peach and fighting off Mario. He made his first appearance in the 2002 Nintendo GameCube title Super Mario Sunshine, where he posed as Mario using his Shadow Mario form to get him arrested so he could kidnap Peach, whom he seemingly believed was his biological mother due to his father's lies. After that plot was foiled, Bowser Jr. continued to serve his father faithfully by commanding his forces when he wasn't around or by fighting Mario himself. As he is the heir of Bowser's throne and a prince, Bowser Jr. is the current second-in-command of the Koopa Troop - one step above the previous heirs who are the Koopalings and the adviser Kamek. Bowser Jr. is usually the penultimate boss in modern Super Mario series games.

Biography Little is known about Bowser Jr.'s origins. He is the son of Bowser and an unnamed mother, and the youngest sibling of the Koopalings. Because Bowser is Jr.'s father and never seen his mother, he wants to know who his mother was. Bowser himself would secretly and remorsefully make a lie to him that Princess Peach is her mother. Bowser also told him; Mario was an "evil bad man" and that he is responsible for stealing Peach from him, to which Bowser Jr. wows to rescue and protect her.

Bowser Jr. shares many physical similarities with his father, but he has a red ponytail as opposed to Bowser's spiked hair, small black beady eyes, a more rounded snout, and a single sharp tooth visible in his overbite—features which, along with his body shape, make him look almost identical to Bowser himself at a younger age seen in the Yoshi series (which led some fans to believe Baby Bowser or Koopa Kid is a precursor to Bowser Jr. himself). He often wears a bandana. In Super Mario Sunshine, it was originally blue with a messy drawing of Mario's distinctive nose and mustache, which this was used to transform himself into his alter-ego Shadow Mario, but that was later replaced with a white one with a mouth and sharp teeth drawn it, which he puts over his real mouth to appear more intimidating.

Bowser Jr. seems to be very bratty, spoiled, and mischievous. He is like this because he is raised by his villainous father, who himself was more or less raised in the same manner by Kamek. He also shares his father's affection for Princess Peach and hatred for Mario, whom he aids in kidnapping and fighting respectively. Despite that, they seem to have a genuine father-son relationship and really care for each other, which is shown in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle where Bowser calls Junior on the phone to make sure that he did his homework, implying that he does go to a school of some sort, and later on, Bowser Jr. asks for the heroes' help in saving his father when he was taken over by the Megabug.

In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Bowser Jr. is initially shown to have very little respect towards the rest of the Koopa Troop and arrogantly believes that they must serve him regardless how he treats them due to his status as a prince. However, over the course of the game he learns that the troop serve his father through love and admiration; things that come from respect. After thinking back to how he treated the Koopalings up until that point, Junior felt sad and remorseful, but Bowser Jr. soon made amends for his past behavior and began showing his minions more care since.

The game also shows that Bowser Jr. does not apparently think about morality when he is helping his father in his goals and instead just does what he, himself, thinks is right. It is also stated that he harbors a lonely side that he does not let other people know about, first alluded to in Mario Party DS. This aspect of his personality was explored in greater depth in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam with his friendship to Paper Bowser Junior, and the depths the two go to try to keep Paper Bowser Jr. from being forced to return to his own world. A similar depiction of loneliness was also showcased in the Nintendo Switch Online service trailer's Nintendo Entertainment System portion, where he attempted to ask his dad to let him play his game with him but then nearly walked away dejected when the Koopa King initially ignored him. He also seems more willing to swallow his pride than his father, such as when he convinced Bowser to accept an invitation to a party after their defeat in Mario Super Sluggers, when he apologized to the Koopalings in Bowser Jr.'s Journey, or when he apologized to and begged Mario to rescue his father from the Megabug's influence in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Powers and abilities Bowser Jr. is highly skilled in using his weapons and powers compared to the Koopalings, even Ludwig, making himself a dangerous opponent in spite of his bratty behavior. He has various skills such as healing, timing and transforming. Bowser Jr., like his father, is also known to be proficient at using machinery.

Behind the scenes Portrayals Since his first appearance in Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr. is voiced by Atsuki Murata in the Japanese version and Dolores Rogers in English version. He is later voiced by Yui Horie in the Japanese version and Caety Sagoian in the English versions since.

Trivia According to the official Mario Power Tennis website, it says Bowser Jr. lives on 48 Lava Cul-De-Sac, Magma Manor. Like the Koopalings, despite being a major antagonist in the Mario franchise, Bowser Jr. is not inherently evil. There are some cases where he can be friendly at times or genuinely ask for Mario and friends' help when he is worried about his father Bowser such as in Bowser's Fury. The pads of Bowser Jr's feet are similar to that of Birdo's. It is revealed in Super Mario Galaxy that Bowser Jr. actually has two fangs. One just sticks out more. Bowser Jr., due to his appearance and mischievous behavior, is often considered by fans as among the cutest villainous Super Mario series characters, not unlike his older siblings the Koopalings. In a "Mario Myths" video where Shigeru Miyamoto was answering questions about the series, he was asked if he knows who the mother of Bowser Jr. is, to which Miyamoto simply nodded and then pointed at himself.[2] His "corrupted" form from Super Mario Bros. Wonder slightly resembles Bowser's Brother from Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels as well as Dark Bowser from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

Bowser and Bowser Jr. can be seen as morality pets towards each other. Bowser Jr. may act like an arrogant, selfish, destructive brat around most people, but when interacting with his dad, he's an obedient, enthusiastic, and very loving son. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle's final act puts this in a more dramatic light as Bowser Jr.'s concern for his father leads him to go as far as to ask Mario's team to save him. While Bowser may have a nasty temper and be a jerk towards his allies at times, Jr is able to appeal to Bowser's softer side and constantly tells Jr how proud he is of him. Some of Bowser's most sympathetic moments have been while interacting with his son such as in the ending to Sunshine. After his first appearance Bowser Jr. would appear in many spin offs being playable before returning to a boss in New Super Mario bros for the DS. Bowser Jr. is the only 3DS/Wii U newcomer to be unlockable in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and a starter character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, as Ness, Jigglypuff and Ganondorf were veterans.
