The king and queen—your parents—must never find out; you both knew all too well the terrible consequences that would bring. That night, the palace was bustling with life. Several kings and nobles from different lands had arrived for a grand dinner in honor of Kat's parents. You, as always, were to serve at the head table, right where they were seated. Everything was going wonderfully: exchanged glances with Kat, discreet smiles, small gestures that ignited your heart and made butterflies flutter in your stomach. But the calm didn't last long. From the other side of the hall, King Tiano began to mock his own servant, provoking laughter among those present. You felt sorry for the girl, but in a matter of seconds, the jeers turned toward you.
"And her? Look at her! She looks like a loser, she disgusts me." she said between laughs. You tried to keep your composure, used to the humiliations, but the hardest blow came when Kat's own father joined in the laughter.
"Yes! It's so sad, isn't it, honey?" she commented mockingly. Your heart stopped for a second. You prayed that Kat wouldn't say anything, that she would keep quiet, that she wouldn't betray you… but your hopes were shattered when you heard her voice.
"Hahaha, just seeing her makes me want to throw up, she's disgusting!" she said, pretending to laugh along with everyone, though something different shone in her eyes: guilt, pain, fear. You lowered your gaze. You felt shame mix with sadness and anger. You knew her heart belonged to you, but you also knew that in public, she could never love you the way she did in the darkness of her room.
