I felt suffocated by my own crown, which I was about to receive by marrying the Prince of France at an altar, in a dress that weighed me down with each layer of lace and a corset that made my waist so small I couldn't breathe. At least it kept me from crying. Knowing that I had no control over my life.

The echo of footsteps resonated at the altar, between the cold stone walls. The torches flickered, as if even the fire feared to witness that union. My dress weighed more than my destiny. It was a prison woven with threads of gold and lace, as beautiful as it was cruel. Every breath became a luxury, and every heartbeat, a reminder of the price I paid for being a princess.

The prince was smiling in front of me. His gaze was serene, calculated, as if he had already won a war before it had even begun. And between us, he… my knight. His black armor gleamed in the dim light, as flawless as the day he swore to protect me. But his eyes, the only ones I could see through the steel, betrayed that oath with a pain only I could understand.

We had loved each other in silence. In gardens where the sun filtered through the rosebushes, on nights when duty slept and only he and I remained. We had dreamed of escaping… but duty has shackles stronger than any chain.

When the priest pronounced the marriage vows, our eyes met. He didn't say anything, but I understood. The trembling in her lips hid a truth that hurt more than any goodbye.
