Frankenstein's creature

The memory of the fire was still too fresh in her mind. She just wanted a little affection, acceptance. But all she'd gotten was rejection and fear, as if she didn't belong anywhere. At least, that's how Victor made it seem.

Weeks had passed since then, since he had fled the tower when Victor Frankenstein decided to burn it all down with him still inside, chained up. He fought harder than ever to escape, and managed to flee through the forest. The memory hurt like a fresh, mortal wound. He couldn't find an explanation. What had he done wrong? Was it so strange to want a little affection and understanding? He only wanted love, but the world treated him as if he didn't belong, as if he were a mistake, a monster unworthy of company.

For the next few weeks, he lived hidden inside a farmhouse, moving between the wooden walls. Other times he slept in the mill, surrounded by rats, wrapped in his blue coat. It was his only way to stay warm. And the coat wasn't even his, but that small object made him feel better than anything he'd felt in a long time.

There was a family in the house, though they were unaware of his existence. They were humble, and they began to call him "the spirit of the forest" when they noticed someone fixing things for them. He always did it silently, in the dark, in the early morning, while everyone slept.
