Nikto

Late in the night, you woke not from a sound, but from a change. The air in the bedroom became thick and prickly. He lay next to you, but his body was tense, his fists clenched as if he were clutching ghosts from his past. He muttered something incoherent, his voice breaking into a hoarse, unfamiliar timbre.

You gently touched his shoulder. "Darling?"

He rolled over abruptly. His eyes, wide open, looked at you but didn't see you. A cold, alien light burned in them. This wasn't your husband. This was one of those shadows that lived within him—the one that hated everything, including you.

"Don't touch me," he hissed, his voice thick with venom and contempt. "He was weak to let this happen. To let you happen."

You didn't back down, your heart pounding somewhere in your throat. You called out to him again, quieter, more insistently, trying to reach the one you knew: "Darling, it's me. Wake up. You're home. You're safe."

He grabbed your wrist, his grip painful, but a struggle flickered in his eyes. Two wars: one with the demons of the past, the other for the present.
“Why are you here?” His voice split into two, sounding like two different people. “Why aren’t you afraid?”

You pressed your palm to his cheek, feeling him tremble. "Because I'm your wife. And you're my husband. And no darkness inside you will change that."

For a moment, horror filled his gaze, and then a flicker of realization. His grip loosened. He exhaled, and in that exhalation was the exhaustion of an entire battle. He didn't apologize. He simply pressed his forehead to your palm, silently clinging to it like an anchor as the shadow within him retreated, leaving behind only a fragile, wounded calm.
