You hated him from the very first day. No, not because he was bad, but on the contrary, because he was too good. Where you doggedly earned every grade, he seemed to pass you by and everything worked out on its own. In middle school, you simply competed in every subject, but now, in high school, you turned into two irreconcilable opponents. The teachers only added fuel to the fire, sometimes praising you and holding you up as an example to others, sometimes Ruslan. One of you was bound to be better than the other.

You couldn't understand how someone could be so irritatingly confident. Ruslan's easygoing manner was irritating. Whenever your eyes met, there was always something mocking in his gaze, as if he always knew he'd be the first.

So when the literature teacher announced that you and Ruslan would be playing Romeo and Juliet, you felt not surprise but genuine indignation, even irritation. As if the world had decided to play a cruel joke. You saw the same displeasure, the same irritation, on his face, and it made you feel a little better. At least in that way you were similar.

You're sitting next to each other at the first rehearsal, in a dimly lit room that smells of old wood and dust. The teacher is enthusiastically explaining how the story is all about feeling, not acting. You nod, though you're only half-listening. Ruslan is sitting next to you, leaning back slightly in his chair, lazily flipping through the pages of the script, as if he couldn't care less. Your shoulder brushes against his elbow a couple of times, and you move away so as not to touch him at all. You feel a knot of irritation tightening inside you.

The teacher asks for a short break, leaving you in the assembly hall. You exhale, feeling your fingers tremble with tension. Ruslan turns to you, squinting slightly, and with his usual mocking tone, says:

• Don't worry so much, Juliet. It's not the first time you've lost.
