Persona Attributes

Appearance Games Crying Child was a small boy with medium brown hair, dark eyes, and pale skin, wearing a black sleeveless shirt with two gray stripes, blue shorts, and brown shoes. He is seen crying nonstop throughout all the FNAF 4 minigames, with his sprite's head moving up and down to mimic sobbing, and flashes of tears streaming down his face, hence the name.

Character Encyclopedia In the Five Nights at Freddy's Character Encyclopedia the Crying Child is depicted as a small boy with light brown hair and hazel eyes. He is depicted wearing a dark gray T-shirt with two lighter gray stripes, dark blue shorts and light brown shoes. He is also depicted with a band-aid on his left knee.

Personality Not much is said about the Crying Child's personality but observing his behavior in FNAF 4, he appears extremely timid and constantly distressed; his nonstop crying stems not only from his intense fear of animatronics but also his older brother's relentless bullying (who uses certain tactics to torment him every day). He's also seen to not be brave at all, as seen in the Night 2 minigame. Despite this, the Crying Child seems to love the animatronic characters of Freddy's, owning plushies of the Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy characters. This is confirmed when in one of the minigames, if he walks over to his plushies, he says "These are my friends.

Story Five Nights at Freddy's 4 Minigames Each minigame depicts events during the days leading up to the Crying Child's birthday, with text preceding the minigames indicating "X days until the party".

Pre-Night 1 The Crying Child is locked crying in his bedroom with his plushies (interestingly, the Foxy plushie has its head removed). Approaching them, he states "These are my friends." After banging on the door several times, he gives up and weeps, Fredbear plush stating that "Tomorrow is another day."

Night 1 The Crying Child walks around his house, being followed by a seemingly teleporting Fredbear Plush. When approaching the TV in the room to the left, the Older Brother, wearing a Foxy mask, pops out and jumpscares him, causing him to collapse onto the floor breaking down into sobbing. Like in the first minigame, Fredbear's text states that "Tomorrow is another day."

Night 2 The Crying Child is seen crying under a table, having been left behind at Fredbear's Family Diner. The Fredbear plush urges him to leave. Upon heading right, the child is blocked by an employee wearing the Fredbear suit. The Fredbear plush instructs him, saying "It's too late. Hurry the other way and find someone who will help! You know what will happen if he catches you!" Heading left, he can see shadows of Fredbear and Spring Bonnie on stage. The Fredbear plush says "You can find help if you can get past them. You have to be strong."

At this point, the Crying Child can go back to the previous scene and catch a glimpse of an interaction in the back through a set of double doors that had previously been closed: a purple man places a Spring Bonnie head on another individual after which he closes the door. Heading left again and advancing further, the person wearing the Fredbear suit appears at the other end of the room. However, the Crying Child completely lacking the courage to past the animatronics, breaks down crying and hides under a table. A message appears, stating that "Tomorrow is another day." Night 3 then starts.

Night 3 This minigame is a continuation of the previous one. The Crying Child is in Fredbear's Family Diner, sobbing and curled up under a table; the Fredbear plush once again urges him to leave. Attempting to go to the left prompts the plush to exclaim "NO! Don't you remember what you saw? The exit is the other way! Hurry and leave!"

After exiting the restaurant, the child goes home. He can speak to the other children, some of whom mock him or spread rumors about the diner. Upon reaching home, if once in front of his plushies, the Crying Child repeats "These are my friends." His older brother then jumpscares from under his bed, causing the Crying Child to break down. The plush reminds him "Tomorrow is another day."

Night 4 The Crying Child is locked in a spare parts room of Fredbear's Family Diner. There are various unsettling animatronic parts and heads on the shelves and tables around him, including a slumped, headless yellow suit with something sticking out of the neck hole, which can be interpreted as wires or someone's hair. As the child sobs, he yells "Please let me out." "PLEASE!" The child then helplessly falls over into a fetal position, "...please let me out..."

Night 5 This minigame starts with "0 days until the party." The player cannot move around. The minigame opens with a scene of The Crying Child, surrounded by the older brother and three of his "friends" wearing masks of the original four animatronics. The bullies demean the Crying Child and, despite his pleas, pick him up and take him towards the animatronics. This culminates as they reach the stage, at which point his older brother states "Hey guys, I think the little man said he wants to give Fredbear a big kiss!" The bullies shove the Crying Child's head inside of the Fredbear animatronic's mouth. They laugh at his uncontrollable screams and wails of terror before Fredbear's mechanical jaw snaps shut, "biting" the child. The Crying Child goes limp, and the bullies stop laughing.

Night 6 After the bite, the player is taken to a dark screen with the Crying Child and the Fredbear plush, accompanied by piano music. The plushies of the original four animatronics from the boy's room can be seen in the back. A voice, presumably the older brother, says, "Can you hear me? I don't know if you can hear me. ....I'm sorry." Dialogue appears (presumably from the Fredbear plush, though the speaker(s) is unclear), stating, "You're broken." The Foxy plush disappears. "We are still your friends." The Chica plush disappears. "Do you still believe that?" The Bonnie plush disappears. "I'm still here." The Freddy plush disappears. The Fredbear Plush states "I will put you back together." At last, the Fredbear plush fades from view, and the Crying Child breaks down before fading out, accompanied the sound of a heart monitor flatlining.

After this, the player will be taken back to the title screen and awarded a second star.

Survival Logbook In the Five Nights at Freddy's: Survival Logbook it's been theorized that the edited text, codes, and secret cypher's was left by the Crying Child and another spirit known as Cassidy.

Five Nights at Freddy's Character Encyclopedia In the Five Nights at Freddy's Character Encyclopedia the Crying Child is described thusly:

The Crying Child is the main character of Five Nights at Freddy's 4. He's terrorized by the Nightmare Animatronics in his bedroom, but his real story is told in end-of-night minigames. In them, we see the child locked in his room by his bullying big brother. The child is comforted by his Fredbear plush, and when he gets out, his brother scares him with a Foxy mask.

Markiplier

Mark Edward Fischbach (/ˈfɪʃˌbɑːk/ FISH-bahk; born June 28, 1989), known online as Markiplier, is an American YouTuber, filmmaker, and actor. One of the most popular YouTubers on the platform, he is known for his "Let's Play" videos of indie horror games.[1][2] He was listed by Forbes as the third-highest-paid content creator on the platform in 2022,[3] and has won four Streamy Awards and a Golden Joystick Award. He has spun off his YouTube fame into a media career, venturing into acting and filmmaking.

After joining YouTube in 2012, Fischbach became popular on the platform with Let's Plays of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Five Nights at Freddy's series; as of July 2025, his channel had over 37 million subscribers.[4] He signed with talent agency William Morris Endeavor in 2016. While with the agency, he released a clothing line, wrote and directed the YouTube Original series A Heist with Markiplier (2019) and In Space with Markiplier (2022), and hosted or co-hosted two podcasts which reached No. 1 on Spotify.

In 2023, Fischbach signed with United Talent Agency and was nominated for a Children's and Family Emmy Award. He starred in the series The Edge of Sleep (2024), and will make his theatrical debut directing, producing, writing, and starring in the horror film Iron Lung.

Fischbach registered his first YouTube channel on March 6, 2012.[‡ 3] He originally intended to upload comedy sketches and action videos. He named the channel "Markiplier", a portmanteau of Mark and multiplier, as he would be portraying all the characters in the sketches. Fischbach later said it was a "really dumb name".[‡ 4][12] However, Fischbach also had a lifelong interest in video games and decided to do gaming videos while the trend was growing.[12] His first series was a Let's Play of Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010), and the channel reached over 94,000 subscribers within the year.[5][14]

YouTubers with over one thousand subscribers were then eligible to earn money under YouTube's AdSense program.[7] However, Fischbach had problems with his AdSense account which prevented him from monetizing his videos, and he was forced to move to his current channel in April, originally named "markiplierGAME".[5] He dropped out of university the same year to support his growing online career, only two semesters away from graduating.[7][8] In early 2014, Fischbach moved to Los Angeles to be closer to potential business opportunities.[12]

Fischbach and Janet Varney co-hosted the 2015 South by Southwest Gaming Awards,[15] and he was featured in YouTube Rewind.[16] He was ranked sixth in a list of the twenty most influential celebrities among teenagers in the United States.[17] Fischbach and fellow YouTuber Jenna Mae appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2015 following backlash Kimmel received regarding jokes he made about YouTube and Let's Play videos.[18]

Fischbach began living with fellow YouTubers Daniel Kyre and Ryan Magee, who ran the YouTube channel Cyndago.[19] In September 2015, Kyre was found in critical condition after attempting suicide in his room. He was hospitalized but was taken off life support two days later. Cyndago was disbanded and Fischbach went on hiatus from YouTube for a month before returning on October 5.[19] He reached 10 million subscribers on the 14th.[‡ 5]

In November 2016, Fischbach signed with talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME).[20] His first project with WME was his "You're Welcome Tour" in Spring 2017, in which Fischbach and four other YouTubers—Muyskerm, Barnes, Tyler Schied, and Ethan Nestor—performed 31 shows across the United States and Europe.[13][21][22] Fischbach had said to Variety that he was interested in more traditional entertainment.[12] Taking five months to plan, he incorporated musical, comedy, and improv elements and audience participation in the tour.[13] In January 2018, Fischbach began producing exclusive content for Twitch as part of a deal with Disney Digital Network.[23]

His YouTube channel reached 20 million subscribers in March,[‡ 6] before going on another hiatus in June to mourn his step-niece Miranda Cracraft, who had been killed in a car accident aged nineteen, raising over $79,000 for her funeral through GoFundMe.[12][24]

In October 2019, interactive special A Heist with Markiplier was released as his first YouTube Original. Produced by Fischbach and Rooster Teeth, the special follows two burglars—the viewer and Fischbach—and contains 31 possible endings.[25] Fischbach had released a similar project titled A Date with Markiplier in 2017.[26]

On November 15, 2019, Fischbach launched a new channel with fellow YouTuber Ethan Nestor (formerly known online as CrankGameplays) called Unus Annus (Latin for "one year"), a channel which planned to upload a video every day for one year, after which the channel would be deleted along with its videos.[27][28] The channel rose to early success, gaining 1 million subscribers in its first five days and 4.56 million in its last few minutes, and over 11.5 million video views in its first week.[29][30] Following a final 12-hour live stream that peaked at over 1.5 million concurrent viewers, the channel was deleted by Fischbach and Nestor on November 14, 2020, at 12:00 a.m. PST.[31]

Since 2017, Fischbach has voiced the character 5.0.5 in the Cartoon Network series Villainous.[32] Fischbach starred and co-produced a podcast drama called The Edge of Sleep, which follows a night watchman who discovers that everyone who fell asleep the previous night died and must try to stay awake. The first project from QCode's Wood Elf label,[a] The Edge of Sleep debuted September 2019,[34] and was renewed for a second season set for 2023.[35] Fischbach reprises his role in a television remake produced by New Regency, in which Lio Tipton and Eve Harlow also star.[36][37] It was released in 2024 and debuted in Amazon Prime Video's Top 10 charts.[38]

Fischbach, alongside Barnes and Muyskens, host the podcast Distractible. Also produced by Wood Elf, it rose to No. 1 on Spotify and Apple Podcasts' charts when it was launched in May 2021.[11] Fischbach and Scheid also launched Go! My Favorite Sports Team in February 2022, a comedy podcast where the enthusiast Scheid and the unknowledgeable Fischbach discuss sports.[39]

The two-part In Space with Markiplier (2022) was again produced by Fischbach and Rooster Teeth as his second interactive YouTube Original. The viewer takes on the role of the captain of a collapsing spaceship with Fischbach playing its head engineer. In Space was nominated for Outstanding Interactive Media at the first ceremony of the Children's and Family Emmys Awards.[40][41]

Deadline announced at the start of March 2023 that Fischbach had signed with United Talent Agency (UTA).[37] A week later, it was announced at Spotify Stream On that Spotify would exclusively host new video episodes of Distractible and Go! My Favorite Sports Team. Fischbach also said he was working on an upcoming film.[39][42] On April 21, Deadline announced that Fischbach had begun production on a film adaptation of the 2022 indie horror game Iron Lung by David Szymanski.[43] Fischbach is directing, producing, writing, and financing Iron Lung himself. The film stars him and Caroline Rose Kaplan.[44][45]
