The Exi Regulation Committee is the body responsible for developing rules and overseeing Exi.

The Ravens transferred to the Southeast District to compete with the Foxes. The transfer was kept quiet until June, as the ERC knew Kevin's move to the Foxes had already generated a lot of controversy and wanted to give Coach Wymak a chance to protect his players. The transfer was approved because the Ravens are the only Class I ERC team in West Virginia, and the ERC expected Kevin and Rico to compete against each other, which would generate widespread publicity. Edgar Allan University's ERC team, the top team in the country at the time of the 2006 events, was the best in the country.

Exy is a team sport played on a court with plexiglass walls and ceiling. Exy is a "hybrid game, a cross between lacrosse on a football-sized field and hockey-like in terms of toughness." A team must have at least nine players (and eventually twelve. See the last paragraph in the Teams section), but only six are allowed on the court at a time. Each player has a stick with a net of varying depth. To score, players must aim the ball into the goal—a rectangular rectangle marked on the wall. If the ball enters the goal, it lights up red. The goal of the game is to outscore the opponent.

An Exi match is played in two halves of forty-five minutes each with a fifteen-minute break. The dimensions of the playing field (L x W x H): 91.5 x 55 x 9 meters.

Neil is described as a short, athletic young man. In the first two books, Neil dyes his hair black and wears brown contact lenses to disguise his identity and blend in. His hair is red[1], and his true eyes are a cool shade of blue. It has been noted several times that he greatly resembles his father, to the point that he cannot even look at his reflection without feeling nauseous. Neil distrusts other people. He rejects their offers of help and tries to solve every problem on his own, which makes him withdrawn and secretive. Neil also tries to constantly control situations.

Andrew Joseph Minyard is a criminal justice student at Palmetto University and the Foxes' goalkeeper. He is known for his brutality both on and off the field, a trait attributed to his unstable upbringing in foster care, a stint in a juvenile detention center, and mania caused by court-prescribed antidepressants. His biological mother abandoned him at birth, leading to twelve unsuccessful foster homes and the first conviction that the world was dangerous and that no one wanted him. In each family, he experienced violence and felt like someone who would inevitably be discarded, even over time. A rape at age seven shaped a pattern of hatred toward requests, as no matter how much he begged, it never stopped (this is where his hatred for the word "please" developed). Consequently, from childhood onwards, the basis of identity became rejection and aversion, which provoked an aversion to empty words and promises, a pattern of behavior according to which absolutely no one can be trusted unconditionally.

Kevin has green eyes like his mother and dark hair. He is considered handsome. Due to his traumatic upbringing, Kevin likely suffers from anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder and is obviously afraid of the people who have abused him for most of his life. He does not know how to cope with problems in a healthy way and lashes out at people or drinks; it is worth noting that he did not drink before joining the Foxes. Kevin has visible scars on his left arm from a fracture. He had the number 2 tattooed on his left cheekbone. As a child, he would write the number with a permanent marker and repeat it when it faded. Rico did the same, but with the number 1. Later in the series, he covers it up with a queen chess piece. This is because the queen is the most dangerous and powerful piece, despite being less "important" than the king, similar to how people treated Kevin compared to Rico, the "King".

Nicky Hammick is Andrew and Aaron's cousin. He doesn't have a good relationship with his parents, who refuse to accept his sexuality, so he studied in Germany for a year. While there, he met Eric, who was part of his "host family." He eventually began a serious relationship with Eric, which he continued even after returning to America and entering college. Nicky has dark skin and dark eyes, and is quite tall. He looks nothing like his cousins.

Rico is Japanese. He has the number 1 tattooed on his left cheekbone. Kevin has a corresponding number 2. As children, they drew the numbers with a permanent marker and redrew them when they faded. Rico is 5 feet 5 inches tall. Even as a child, Rico was cruel, taking it out on his "stepbrother." He didn't consider either Kevin or Jean (later also bought by the Moriyama family) close, viewing them more as objects. This attitude was ingrained in him from infancy, and therefore Rico reacted particularly aggressively to Kevin's escape.

Renee is a girl with a pretty pretty appearance. The last two inches of her hair are dyed pastel colors, her hair is cut into a bob. She dresses as feminine as possible and practically does not wear makeup. She is the oldest member of the Foxes (after Seth's death). She also has a tattoo on her back with wings, which were originally planned as angelic, but in the end, due to the unprofessionalism of the master in the gang, they turned out to be similar to dragons. Renee herself considers this to be quite symbolic and ironic.

Alison Reynolds is a midfielder for the Foxes. She is the former heiress of the immensely wealthy Reynolds family. After choosing to play Exy rather than continue the family business, she was disowned and stripped of her family fortune. Her family owns a chain of resorts and their wealth amounts to billions of dollars.
