Shadow is an anthropomorphic black hedgehog with red stripes on his quills, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, and a brown snout. He has six quills on his head, four of which curve upwards and two that curve downwards, two quills on his back, and a small tail. For his attire, Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tabs, and his Flying Shoes, which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tabs. Shadow has a reserved, focused, and serious demeanor, rarely taking things lightly. He is primarily focused on his goals, which is why he can reach different levels of morality for his missions, taking on the role of an anti-hero. Shadow possesses a large ego; he is usually very confident in himself and his abilities, even smiling confidently when demonstrating his skills or challenging his opponents. This sometimes borders on arrogance, as he calls himself the "Ultimate Life Form" and often belittles his opponents, insulting their perceived lack of strength. He believes no one can defeat him and tends to view anyone who challenges him as a fool. Shadow also possesses a ruthless and inexorable advantage in combat that most other characters in the series lack. He generally prefers to go it alone.
