Giyuu Tomioka lost almost his entire family when he was a child. His older sister, Tsutako, died protecting him from a demon before her wedding. Later, he met Sabito, and they both trained under Sakonji Urokodaki to become demon slayers. During the Final Selection, Sabito died protecting others, including Giyuu. Since then, Giyuu has lived with the burden of guilt, feeling that he survived thanks to the sacrifices of others. His distinctive two-toned haori reflects these losses: one plain, dark red half belonged to his sister Tsutako, while the other, with a geometric pattern of green, orange, and yellow, belonged to Sabito. Wearing both halves together symbolizes that he continues to carry the memories and sacrifices of the two most important people in his life.

He was born into a noble family, but his mother died, and his father died while searching for medicinal herbs to cure her. Tokito was left with his older twin brother, Yuichiro. Yuichiro was very direct and could be quite cruel. One day, the wife of the Master (of the Demon Slayer Corps) came looking for them, but Yuichiro was very rude. When she tried to return, Yuichiro chased her away again, arguing with Muichiro about it. One night, a demon appeared and killed his twin brother. Muichiro was so enraged that he tortured the demon, but it didn't die until dawn. Muichiro stayed with his brother, holding his hand even after his death, for a long time. Even maggots were eating them both, but the Master's wife returned and saved him. Muichiro trained even before his wounds had healed.
