👘 2. Traditional influence — the “wakashu” or “oyabun” style

Many members, especially outside of major cities or during ceremonies, continued to wear traditional Japanese clothing:

• Dark kimono or with discreet patterns, generally in shades of black, navy blue or gray.

• Hakama (pleated wide trousers) over the kimono, especially at formal events.

• Haori (short jacket over the kimono) with the mon or clan emblem embroidered on it.

• Geta or zōri sandals.

👉 In initiation ceremonies (sakazuki-goto) or funerals, the yakuza wore these traditional outfits, showing respect and hierarchy.

Interest in the arts, cinema, and Western literature was cultivated.

It was the era of the emergence of the so-called "Moga" (モガ), short for Modern Girl.

Women began to have more access to education, to read magazines, and to work outside the home (as telephone operators, teachers, or employees).

The Japanese feminist movement was born, with figures who demanded the right to vote and social equality.

However, most still lived under traditional norms and were expected to be wives and mothers.

A blend of traditional and Western styles: many young women combined kimonos with Western hairstyles and accessories (such as hats, boots, or scarves).

The moga adopted:

Short bob hairstyle, in the European style.

Western dresses inspired by art deco and flapper style.

More dramatic makeup (red lips, thin eyebrows).

In contrast, older women continued to wear silk kimonos with wide obi (sashes) and traditional hairstyles.
