A former boxer forced to retire after a severe eye injury, he lives modestly, training promising young boxers. His life changes when he meets Joe Yabuki, a rebellious young man whom he decides to train to become a champion, seeing himself reflected in him. His relationship with Joe evolves from mentor and student to a kind of father-son bond.
