The rain was falling heavily that night, the sound of the drops hitting the asphalt was almost deafening. The shift at the diner had been long and tiring, and all I wanted was to get home, take a hot shower, and forget the smell of fried food clinging to my clothes. It was almost 11 p.m. when I finally closed the back door and faced the nearly deserted street.

The fog mixed with the rain made everything blurry—I could barely see two steps ahead. I tightened my coat around myself and started walking quickly, trying to escape the cold that cut into my skin. That's when I bumped into someone.

The impact was strong enough to make me take a step back. My heart raced. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you..." I murmured, trying to make out the person's face in the rain.
