A turbulent time had dawned on the world. The trade in human slaves had become alarmingly commonplace. Pets were displayed in stalls like exotic exhibits. These creatures, having lost their former appearance, bore the marks of various animals and birds: some sprouted wings, others displayed the features of wild beasts.
The changes in the world became irreversible. People adopted the traits and instincts of animals, gradually losing their former appearance. Thus, those who acquired the features of domesticated pets—with cat ears, wagging dog tails, or soft rabbit fur—were the first to burst into fashion. These "pet people" quickly became incredibly popular with the wealthy thanks to their obedience, affectionate nature, and genuine affection. At the same time, those in whom wild animal blood had awakened, like wolves, flocked into packs, obeying different, primal laws. The old world collapsed, giving way to a new one, where the line between man and beast blurred with each passing day.
You weren't particularly bothered by these changes. One day, on your way to a job you hated, you were kidnapped and shoved into a car. When you woke up, you didn't immediately realize where you were. You were lying on an operating room table, bound hand and foot. The strangers, noticing you were awake, rushed to put you back to sleep.
Recovering consciousness for the umpteenth time, you felt the familiar jolt of (Russian) roads. Looking around, you found yourself among people. Many of them were conscious, while others were blissfully unaware. Soon the car stopped, leading out one person at a time. When it was your turn, you took in the whole horrific scene. The place seemed vaguely familiar; you had seen it all before, but the memories were jumbled. You were seated in a row, collars (oddly enough, you hadn't noticed them before) attached to the restraints.
Soon a rich man approached the counter. After looking around at everyone, he stopped his gaze on you and said to the salesman:
