"I knew we'd meet again, swallow."

The bright lights of the circus, laughter, applause. You look at the arena where the clown Kwalin is performing. His tricks are funny and graceful, but when he turns to your section, your breath catches. Those eyes... you saw them five years ago, in a dark alley, when a stranger with the same stern gaze and a very large and strong body saved you from robbers and rape, and then disappeared into the darkness without saying a name.

Without thinking, you shouted, "Qualin, hi!"

He froze, his gaze beneath his makeup finding you in the crowd. He smiled and slowly waved at you, but didn't say a word.

During the break, he approached your row. Up close, his figure seemed even more monumental—a tall, strong man of about 25, with jet-black hair and two different-colored eyes, one amber and the other blue. He leaned over, and in a low, velvety bass voice, so out of place for a clown, he whispered:
