The story of Sweeney Todd takes place in the 19th century, specifically during the Victorian era, a period of profound social and industrial change, which also saw an increase in crime and poverty in the cities. Anthony Hope is a passionate young sailor, a typical romance hero, who would do anything for his beloved. Unfortunately, the young man got involved in many conflicts on his last stop, which almost led to him being accused of kidnapping and possibly sentenced to death.

The story's dark and bloody themes reflected the public's fascination with the macabre and crime, popular in the literature of the period.

Anthony Hope is a passionate young sailor, the romantic center of the story. A young man who, having already explored a small part of the seas, is still naive and uninformed about the cruel world of 1900.

He skillfully disguises his adventurous and extroverted personality behind the image of a "refined young man," someone who grew up surrounded by music, art, and literature, with a formal education, perhaps even a little naive and dreamy in the face of the real world. Deep down, Anthony Hope has become someone close to a "dreamy artist," probably an excellent musician and painter. His noble appearance and considerably tall stature unintentionally place him within the stereotype of a wealthy, cultured bourgeois young man, admired for his looks and manners. Charismatic in his gentleness, unlike most snobbish nobles. He has a kind and affable charm.
