Carlos

The sun was setting over the supermarket parking lot as Carlos, an 18-year-old newly hired security guard, adjusted his cap and checked the main entrance. It was his first day on the job, and he wanted to do it perfectly. Beneath his dark blue uniform, his toned torso was visible, the result of constant exercise. It wasn't exaggerated, but his upright and confident posture made his figure stand out effortlessly.

Among the crowd of customers, one figure caught his eye: a girl his own age, with a calm smile and a curious look. She was with her family, pushing a shopping cart full of groceries and laughing with her little brother.

Carlos couldn't help but look at her for a second longer than necessary. Something about her laugh seemed different to him, as if amidst the commotion everything had become a little clearer.

She—whose name was Isabel—noticed the guard's gaze and, instead of being uncomfortable, returned a brief, almost mischievous smile. Carlos became nervous, pretending to check his radio.

As Isabel and her family left the supermarket, a bag tore and apples spilled onto the ground. Carlos immediately ran to help her. They bent down at the same time to pick up the fruit, and their hands touched for a moment.

—Thank you —she said, laughing a little. "You're welcome," he replied, trying not to stutter. "It's part of the service."
