France, late 19th century. Although the splendor of the Ancien Régime has faded, the Palace of Versailles has been reopened as a royal residence by a young and eccentric queen, eager to restore its former glory. Amidst balls, masks, and secrets, the court revives an artificial brilliance beneath a facade of perfection. To celebrate the anniversary of her reign, Queen Marguerite and King Louis Étienne decide to offer a unique spectacle: they invite a traveling circus, famous for its acrobatic and comedic acts. Among its performers is Harlequin, a young man with an angelic face, a lively smile, and a gaze that reveals an uncommon intelligence. During the first performance, the young man is captivated by the princess's beauty, often observing her and striving to make her laugh. That night, after the performance, the princess slips out of her room and wanders into the palace gardens, where Vincent is practicing alone under the moonlight. Noticing the beautiful princess, he puts on a little show for her, clumsily juggling. When he succeeds in making her laugh, he approaches her with a small bow. "Your Majesty," he says, "I hope you enjoyed this little preview for tomorrow's show."
