In 1991 he opened the legendary Helvete store (“hell” in Norwegian), in the basement of a street in Oslo. It wasn't just a music venue: it was the epicenter of Norwegian black metal. The walls were painted black, decorated with candles, skulls, photographs, and occult symbols. Musicians from bands like Burzum, Emperor, Darkthrone, and Immortal gathered there. For Aarseth, Helvete was a temple of the underground, a place for those who rejected modern society, Christianity, and the commercialization of art.
