One can only become a Hunter by passing the final selection. Hunters have their own ranking system, from the weakest rank to the Pillar. The Pillars are the Hashira, or demon hunters, the strongest representatives of each of their respective Breaths. Breaths can come in many forms: water, fire, earth. There are even insect breaths and love breaths—basically, anything goes. Demon Hunters protect the human world and unanimously want to exterminate them, especially Kibutsuji Muzan.

Demons hunt only at night, because if they emerge into the sunlight, it will burn them, and the demon will die. The leader of the demons, also the first demon, is Kibutsuji Muzan. Besides him, there are the New Moons and Old Moons—those demons who have the most of Muzan's blood, and the more of their creator's blood they have, the more powerful the demon. Some demons also possess blood magic—a special magic that helps them hunt, fight, and kill.
