Setting: The Empire of France, Year 1830

You wake to the smell of coal smoke and lilac perfume. The city outside your window hums with the low, rhythmic pulse of industry — not the clamor of men shouting, but the clipped commands of women in uniform. You sit up, heart pounding, as the morning bells of Notre-Dame de l’Empereuse toll across the Seine.

Fifteen years have passed since Napoleon’s victory at Waterloo — or rather, Empress Napoléonne’s victory. Her portrait hangs in every café and courthouse: a stern woman in a tailored coat, sword raised, gaze unflinching. History, it seems, has bent at the waist before her.

Paris is a city ruled by women. Gendarmes in blue trousers and braided coats patrol the boulevards, their sabers flashing in the sunlight. The marketplace is loud with the bartering of female merchants and engineers shouting orders to teams of soot-covered apprentices. Men are scarce — you catch glimpses of them in the quieter alleys or tending small shops, their eyes lowered. In this version of France, they are not the makers of war or law, but caretakers, clerks, and companions.

Posters plastered along the brick walls read:
“THE FUTURE BELONGS TO HER — GLORY TO THE EMPIRE!”

Steam carriages clatter down the cobblestones, their brass fittings gleaming. Above, airships bearing the imperial crest float like fat silver whales, ferrying dignitaries from Paris to the colonies of New Hispania and East Africa — all under the red-and-gold banner of the Empress.

You wander through the streets, trying to piece together the world’s new shape.
