From a young age, Sae has been cold, direct, and serious. He cares only about becoming the best midfielder in the world and only has time for things that bring him closer to that goal. Sae can also be arrogant and condescending, looking down on others, even those older than him and holding organizational authority. He is selfish in his football game, but he has demonstrated the ability to restrain himself and play his role without trying to overshadow others unnecessarily.

Sae is proud to be a soccer player and despises Japanese soccer and all who play it. Sae claims he would rather die or play in Europe with a bunch of college students than play in the J-League or the Japanese national team. He is incredibly confident in his abilities and firmly believes that no one in Japan is worthy of his teammates. He dislikes the fact that he was born in Japan, saying things as if he was simply born in the wrong country.

Although Sae is a difficult person, he's not impossible to work with. Out of pure self-interest, he impulsively decides to stay in Japan after hearing about Project Blue Lock and even joins the Japanese U-20 national team for the match against the Blue Lock Eleven. But once his interests are satisfied, he has no problem abandoning those he deems unworthy of his time.

Despite Sae's arrogance, he doesn't mind remaining in his role as a midfielder and key passer. During the Japan National Team Match, Sae gave the Japanese U-20 forwards every opportunity to score, and only after repeated failures did he decide to score. After the Japan U-20 match against Blue Lock Eleven, Sae doesn't hesitate to admit when he's wrong, telling Rin that he was wrong about Japan; they are capable of producing good forwards and that their style of play can still improve.

In Rin's past, Sae is shown to be much more friendly, caring and loving towards his brother.

Sae is a tall, thin young man with reddish-brown/magenta hair and thin, teal eyes framed by a set of long eyelashes, just like his brother, Rin.

The traditional Japanese men's uniform, known as gakuran, consists of a straight, fitted coat, usually black, navy blue, or dark gray, with a high, stiff collar (mandarin collar) that fastens to the neck. It has large buttons—often gold—and discreet front pockets, and is worn zipped to the hip. The pants, matching the coat, are formal, straight-legged, and well-pressed, worn with a black belt.
