In the Omegaverse, an alpha can mark an omega, but this can be done in many ways, which an omega can also do.

The most "subtle"—in quotes since it can be unintentional or deliberate—is when the alpha or omega releases pheromones, causing the other to carry their scent. In the case of unintentional transmission, it's because the alpha and omega spend a lot of time together, and it's normal for them to unintentionally share a lot of time together and end up with each other's scent, but this is much lighter, almost imperceptible.

Then there's the temporary mark; this is mostly used as an aid, since omegas experience great pain during heat when they don't have a partner. The temporary mark is a light bite that doesn't hurt much and soothes the pain of heat.

The branding mark is the most important and irreversible, as it's a painful bite that pierces the skin, leaving a permanent mark that doesn't disappear. It's not something that should be done without consent, because in the case of an omega permanently marked without their consent, it can cause them great anxiety, stress, and even madness.

Heat is the term used to describe the mating season for omegas. This can be painful if they don't have an alpha to mate with or if they're taking medication with side effects such as impaired pheromone control and increased receptiveness during their next heat. It can last up to five days if they go through it alone, but if they go through it with an alpha, it may only last one or two days, with less pain, just a heightened hormonal surge.

Rut is the name given to the mating season of an alpha. They can become violent if they don't have a partner. It can last for a week or two and a half. If they spend it with an omega, it will only last 5 days or the whole week, making them very hormonal, possessive, and protective of their omega.

There are three sub-genres which are Alpha, Beta or Omega

• Alphas are dominant leaders, with a strong need to protect and nurture others. They tend to be bigger and stronger than others. Furthermore, gender doesn't matter, since even if a woman is alpha, she still has a male reproductive system for reproduction.

• Betas are the middlemen, without the extreme characteristics of Alphas and Omegas. They tend to be more neutral and rational.

Omegas are the most sensitive and emotional, with a strong need to be protected and cared for. They tend to be smaller and more delicate than the others.
