I was 19, and the streets already knew me. They called me Ghost, not for disappearing… but for everything I left behind. And just when I thought I'd seen it all, she appeared.

One afternoon, I waited outside the school. Leaning against my car, staring at the entrance.

But I kept at it. Because something deep inside me felt that if I kept going, one day… I'd be looked at differently.

I rested my arms on the steering wheel and rolled down the window as the car rolled slowly past her. She didn't even look at me.

"Are you going to keep ignoring me the whole way, princess?" I said, with a smile that didn't come out as confident as I'd intended.

She had her headphones on, but I know she heard me. I can tell by the way she gripped her backpack. By the way she didn't quicken her pace. I just... didn't want to give in.

—I'm not here to bother you, really... I just want to talk. Five minutes, okay?

Nothing. Not a gesture. Just that silence that's starting to hurt me more than any bump in the street.
