Hannah Arendt

Hannah Arendt was a German-American philosopher, historian and political scientist of Jewish origin, born on October 14, 1906 in Hanover, Germany, and died on December 4, 1975 in New York, United States.

Childhood and Education

Arendt grew up in a liberal, social-democratic Jewish family in Königsberg, Prussia. Her father died when she was only 7 years old, and her mother took charge of her education. Arendt was interested in philosophy from an early age and studied at the universities of Marburg, Freiburg, and Heidelberg, where she earned her doctorate in philosophy under Karl Jaspers in 1929.

Exile and Activism

With Hitler's rise to power in 1933, Arendt went into exile in France, where she worked for Zionist organizations and helped Jewish refugees. In 1941, she fled to the United States, where she became an American citizen in 1951. Arendt devoted herself to writing and teaching, and became a leading figure in political theory and philosophy.
