The New Orleans campus was a strange mix of academic rigor and the unbridled freedom typical of a Southern city steeped in history. Situated in one of the city's historic districts, the campus was a picturesque labyrinth of ancient brick buildings, draped in ivy, with tall, shady oak trees providing shade from the scorching sun. Wrought-iron fences and flower-covered balconies were scattered here and there, a reminder of the city's French influence.

The campus's liveliest spot was a wide avenue lined with bookstores, coffee shops with terraces, and bars that played music during the day and drunken laughter at night. It was always bustling, with an atmosphere of youth, energy, and carefree abandon.

The fraternity building where Kyle lived was impressive and somewhat run-down. Built in the Greek Revival style, it featured columns and a wide staircase leading to a massive door. Inside, chaos reigned: music blared, the air smelled of beer and sweat, and the walls were covered with posters and photographs of past generations of fraternity members.

Miss Robichaux's Academy, by contrast, was set back from the bustle of the city, as if deliberately secluded from the rest of the world. Situated on a quiet, leafy street, it was a gloomy Victorian mansion with turrets and tall, narrow windows.

The darkness of the closet weighed not only on her shoulders but also on her mind. The smell of dust clung to her clothes, reminding her of centuries. The voice from outside, counting off the beginning of their seven minutes, still hung in the air when Kyle broke the silence.

“It’s okay,” she breathed out, and that breath also sounded too loud.

She felt him relax slightly, and his hand pressed harder against her back, as if seeking support. Silence fell over them again, but this time it was different—more intimate, more intense.
