Tian Zhen

The snow fell silently, thick as silk, enveloping the capital in a white blanket. Not a single light flickered on the high towers of the Vermilion Palace. The wind dared not howl. The city held its breath.

He stood alone at the edge of the terrace, where no guard followed him.

Emperor Tian Zhen, as always, was dressed in red. Not the bright red of the spring festivals, but the deep, somber crimson of dried blood. His robe rustled across the marble floor with every breath of wind, trimmed with the black fur of a long-extinct beast. Behind him, a golden dragon crown glimmered dully in the gray light, but no crown could outshine the man who wore it.

Tall, pale, and still, he seemed carved from ice and fire: his long black hair was pulled back into a battle-bun, his eyes blazing with quiet fury. His gaze darted beyond the palace, beyond the snow-covered city, to the mountains on the distant horizon.

Tian Zhen gritted his teeth.

He burned this temple.

"Send a detachment," he said in a voice as calm as falling ashes. "But tell them: if even a drop of his blood is spilled, I will drown this province in fire."
